چکیده

[1] Analysis of the vertical velocity of ice crystals observed with a 1.5mm Doppler lidar from a continuous sample of stratiform ice clouds over 17 months show that the distribution of Doppler velocity varies strongly with temperature, with mean velocities of 0.2ms 1 at 40 C, increasing to 0.6ms 1 at 10 C due to particle growth and broadening of the size spectrum. We examine the likely influence of crystals smaller than 60mm by forward modelling their effect on the area-weighted fall speed, and comparing the results to the lidar observations. The comparison strongly suggests that the concentration of small crystals in most clouds is much lower than measured in-situ by some cloud droplet probes. We argue that the discrepancy is likely due to shattering of large crystals on the probe inlet, and that numerous small particles should not be included in numerical weather and climate model parameterizations. Doppler lidar measurements of oriented planar ice crystals falling from supercooled and glaciated layer clouds

The properties of planar ice crystals settling horizontally have been investigated using a vertically-pointing Doppler lidar. Strong specular reflections were observed from their oriented basal facets, identified by comparison with a second lidar pointing 4◦ from zenith. Analysis of 17 months of continuous high-resolution observations reveal that these pristine crystals are frequently observed ...

Improved estimates for the fall speed of sub-100μm ice crystals

New theoretical results are presented for the sedimentation rate of realistic ice crystals at sizes smaller than 100 μm. The calculations, which exploit a mathematical analogy with electrostatics, are compared with laboratory studies and found to be in good agreement. These results highlight a weakness in contemporary ice particle fall speed parameterisations for very small crystals, which can ...

Backscatter Matrix Observations by the Gv-hsrl

The GV-HSRL is a high spectral resolution lidar capable of measuring calibrated backscatter, extinction and circular depolarization from the ground or NSF Gulfstream V platform. In the spring of 2012, the instrument was modified to measure the full backscatter matrix of atmospheric scatterers. This modification enabled us to investigate the polarization properties of oriented particles and furt...

Analysis of lidar measurements of ice clouds at multiple incidence angles

[1] The focus of this paper is the retrieval of the oscillation angle of crystals around the horizontal plane, in low-level ice clouds, using the lidar depolarization ratio. An ice cloud located between 0.5 and 2.25 km of altitude has been studied. Measurements were taken near Montreal, on February 2nd, 2000, with a 1.06-mm lidar with scanning capability and dual polarization. The scanning obse...

Supersaturation, dehydration, and denitrification in Arctic cirrus

A polar cirrus case study is discussed with the help of a one-dimensional model with explicit aerosol and ice microphysics. It is demonstrated that continuous cooling of air in regions with small amounts of ice and slow ice deposition rates of water vapor drives significant in-cloud supersaturations over ice, with potentially important consequences for heterogeneous halogen activation. Radiativ...
